A New Season at TONGWOOD: Fall Art Classes for Kids & Teens

2 min read

Fall is taking shape at TONGWOOD.

After a full summer in the studio, our Fall Term is now underway with new monthly projects, age-based classes, and the introduction of our 2.5-hour Art Lab.

This season, students will continue building skills through observation, planning, material exploration, and independent creative work

More Than Following a Sample

At TONGWOOD, projects are starting points—not templates.

Students learn to observe, plan, experiment with materials, and make their own decisions along the way. The goal isn’t for every artwork to look the same, but for each student to build the skills and confidence to develop their own ideas.

OBSERVATION · THINKING · EXPRESSION

Find Their Place in the Studio

 STUDIO ART

Ages 4–6 | 90min

Each week explores a new theme — drawn from cultures, art movements, and the natural world. Students work with 2D and 3D materials, developing their own interpretations rather than copying a set outcome. The focus is on observation, creative thinking, and building confidence with a range of materials.

 PAINTING & DRAWING

Ages 7–9 & 10-14 | 90min

Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist. Skills in sketching, shading, composition, and color are taught through direct demonstration and applied to each student's own work. Instruction is personalized — teachers observe and correct in the moment, supporting steady, visible progress.

 Art Lab

Ages 4–7 & 8-12 | 2.5hr A 2.5-hour session designed for school-day afternoons. Includes a full Studio Art / Painting & Drawing class, followed by guided time for students to explore their own interests, develop personal projects, and bring their ideas to life. Structured enough to learn, open enough to explore.

What We’re Making This September

This month, younger students will explore fall through mixed-media projects, while older students will spend more time on focused skill-building before moving into independent creative work. Drawing, painting, observation, composition, value, and material control will form the foundation for the projects ahead.
